Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Insurance Verification Program

As part of its role of administering motor vehicle laws, DMV monitors liability insurance for vehicles registered in the Commonwealth. To protect the interests of all Virginia motorists, DMV administers an Insurance Verification Program which identifies vehicle owners who are not in compliance with insurance requirements. In a partnership with the insurance industry, DMV participates in the Electronic Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Reporting process. Under this process, all insurance companies authorized or licensed to do business in Virginia furnish liability insurance information to DMV when they issue and cancel liability insurance for vehicles registered in Virginia.
