If you have moved out of Virginia, sold, traded or no longer operate your vehicle,
Virginia Code section 46.2-707 requires you to immediately surrender your license
plates and/or vehicle registration.
You may use this online feature to permanently surrender a license plate and
registration, however, before you complete this transaction, please consider:
- Be sure to wait to cancel your liability insurance on the vehicle until AFTER
you have surrendered your plates.
- If you surrender a plate, you will not be able to transfer the plates to another vehicle.
Once you surrender a plate, you cannot use it again.
- You cannot complete this transaction for a leased vehicle. The individual leasing the
vehicle is not authorized to conduct this transaction.
- You will NOT be eligible for any partial refund of the cost of the registration
fees for this vehicle.
To begin, enter the Plate Number and last 4 digits of the VIN (vehicle identification number).
